You can do you own fitness testing.

For a basic fitness test start by doing a warm up walk for 5-10 minutes.

Then walk briskly for a measured mile on the flat (Approx 20 minutes). Time yourself from the start of the mile to the finish. Take your pulse as you complete the distance and again after one minute. (This is your recovery rate). Do this fitness testing again after a couple of months of regular exercise. You should be walking the mile quicker and recovering faster. This fitness testing costs nothing!
